Tanzania has a good number of international and regional airports. The major airports of entry into Tanzania are:

  • Julius K. Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam Airport)
  • Kilimanjaro International Airport
  • Mwanza International Airport
  • Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (Zanzibar Airport)
  • Songwe International Airport

Tanzania Airports


The biggest of the Tanzania airports is the Julius K. Nyerere International Airport which sits in the city of Dar es Salaam and serves as the number one airport into Tanzania mainland.

The airport currently has two terminals but a third one is under construction and is set to be complete in a few months time. It will cater solely to international flights.

Currently terminal one caters for general aviation and charter services while terminal two caters for international and domestic flight services.

Zanzibar Airport

Formerly known as just Zanzibar International Airport, the airport had its name changed to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in honor of the first president of the Zanzibar island.

The airport serves as the airport of entry into the island of Zanzibar. It sits in Unguja which is the main island of the Zanzibar archipelago.

Airlines Flying To Tanzania Airports


Some of the airlines that organize direct or indirect international flights into Tanzania include: British airways, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian Airways, Kenya Airways, South African Airways, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Scandinavian Airlines, KLM, Air France, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Swiss, North East Airlines, Precision Air, Zan Air, Egypt Air, Air Malawi, Zambezi Airlines, Oman Air and Fly 540.

Ground Transport at Tanzania Airports

It is approximately 12 Km from Julius K. Nyerere International Airport to the city center in Dar es Salaam. Taxis are available and it should cost you around $30 – 40 from the airport to the city center. You can actually pay less than $30 if you bargain well.

Several hotels offer shuttle services form the major airports. Confirm with your hotel if they do offer such services.


Basic amenities that are standard for most airports are available in all the Tanzania airports.

Banking services, ATMs and forex facilities are also available. Most of the international airports have free wireless internet.

A good collection of souvenir shops can also be found at the international airports.


Flying out of Dar? Arrive at the airport in time. Enquire about peak hours so that you are not caught up in traffic.

Carry cash most of the time. You will need cash more than you will need that credit card in your wallet.

Tanzania sits 3 hours ahead of GMT. Adjust your watch accordingly.

The main language spoken in Tanzania is the beautiful Swahili languages. Learn some Swahili phrases so that you make your stay more fun.
